Brex has launched Fall Release 2024, bringing you a new Impact Dashboard that shows detailed metrics on how using Brex helps you make every dollar count—across spend controls, time savings, and earnings. We also added a smarter search experience, new local-currency bill pay, and 50+ great new features.

Impact Dashboard

  • Impact Dashboard: Introducing a new tab called Metrics to provide users with a snapshot of insights on their usage of Brex and how they can maximize their use by adopting other additional features. Learn more about the metrics dashboard here.

Global bill pay

  • Locally funded bill pay: You will be able to flex advantages and maximize value from our multi-entity product as we will soon support locally funded bill pay. This will be limited to some countries. This feature will be available at the end of September, for more information about locally funded bill pay, learn more here.
  • Bill pay local currency wires: We will soon extend the support for local currency wires into our bill pay product. This feature will be available at the end of September, learn more information about local currency wires here.
  • Bill pay polish: We are continuing to elevate our bill pay product by adding the ability to update the payment date of a scheduled bill, auto-approve recurring bills (available in October), and improving the UI for the new bill pay create form. Learn more information about this feature here.

Spend migration dashboard

  • Spend migration: We are making it easier for you to migrate current credit card spend to Brex via the Account Management Surface (AMS) or the Card and Limits page. Customers will have the option of uploading their vendor information either by uploading a card statement or by selecting vendors manually. This will allow for easier spending when using Brex. Bill pay card recommendations

  • Send card to vendor via Email: Customers can choose to pay a bill by a one-time virtual card; they can now securely share the card information via our vendor portal. This feature will be early access, with general access being available in October.

Smart search

  • Smart search: Customers will now be able to take advantage of a global search experience to navigate through their Brex Dashboard and will allow for an enhanced user experience. You will be able to find and highlight keywords and upon searching, the functionality will help you find exactly what you are looking for! Cards and limits enhancements

  • Cards and limits polish: Customers will now be able to filter for more options through their Cards and Limits page. These filters will extend capabilities to filter and group cards by card form, department, and the assigned limit. This feature will be available in early access, with general access in October.
  • Limit groups: Allowing for a new way to easily manage and adjust multiple spend limits in bulk simultaneously. This feature will be early access, with general access being available in October. View the demo here.

Optional spend limits

  • Optional spend limits for bills and reimbursements: Customers will now have the option to bypass selecting a spend limit when submitting a reimbursement or a bill for approval. If enabled, a default and customizable policy will be applied to the expense so that the necessary approvals happen and there is minimal friction throughout the experience. This feature will be available in early access, with general access end of September. Learn more about this functionality here.

Smart tables

  • Smart tables: We previously launched smart tables across the dashboard. We are now expanding smart tables to even more of our tables in the Brex dashboard. This means that new features like, header pinning, custom field filters, saved views, and compact views are now available on the Bills, Teams, Accounting and Cards & Limits pages.

Vendor management enhancements

  • Import vendors from ERP: This feature will allow customers to import vendors and link existing vendors from a customer’s ERP integration to help their seamless setup and start on Brex. This feature will be early access, with general access being available in October.
  • Upgraded vendor portal: Customers can now add and request vendor submission of additional company information, including W9s, company type, and tax information. This feature will be available in early access, with general access in October.
  • Merchant deduplication: With this launch, we are deduplicating card merchants in order to provide better controls. You’ll notice the top merchants are synced and consolidated.

Brex Embedded expansion

  • New partner integrations with GEP, SAP Taulia, and HRS: Seamlessly create Brex virtual cards within your Accounts Payable, ERP, and travel platforms. Enjoy all the benefits of Brex without disrupting your current processes. Convert check, ACH, and wire payments to card payments within existing workflows, with seamless reconciliation. Brex Assistant commenting

  • Assistant commenting: When an out-of-policy expense needs additional context to be evaluated properly, Brex Assistant will ask the employee directly for more details. This will save expense reviewers tons of time and hassle when managing expenses and ensure they only review expenses with all the necessary context. Local autopay

  • Local autopay: Customers have the ability to link foreign (non-US) bank accounts for auto-debiting and paying their Brex statement. Learn more about how to add a local autopay account here.

Accounting accruals

  • Accounting accruals: Customers can now prepare and export transactions as accruals, allowing them to auto-reverse on a future date. This is a common practice when transactions aren't fully approved or categorized by the time books need to close. Additionally, reimbursements can be submitted within the Accruals feature. The feature can be enabled via a new toggle on the integrations settings page. View the demo here, and learn more about this feature here.

Accounting enhancements

  • Accounting enhancements: We introduced several updates to enhance the first-time user experience for accounting, including improvements to export validation, a new integration settings page, and improved entity mapping before export. These changes aim to address common issues and provide clearer guidance throughout the setup and export process. Learn more about it here.
  • Accounting automation enhancements: Accounting automation enhances user experience by providing clear visibility into the effects of rules or suggestions before they are implemented. We've introduced a feature that allows users to preview the impact of rules, along with a list of transactions that would have been affected by these rules. This preview functionality aims to increase user confidence in creating rules, thereby encouraging more extensive use of automation without the fear of making errors. The goal is to improve the overall automation rate by providing this added layer of reassurance. Learn more about these features here.
  • Dependent lists: Dependent lists are a powerful feature in Brex that allows different lists to be connected in a logical sequence to each other. These lists are particularly useful in scenarios requiring structured data entry, such as project phase tasks or complex certifications. This feature is designed to streamline workflows by ensuring that the options available in one field are directly influenced by the selection made in a previous field. Dependent lists enable administrators to configure fields in a way that guides users through a sequential process. This functionality helps to reduce errors and ensures that data is entered consistently. This feature will be early access only.

Automatic ERP field syncing

  • Automatic ERP field syncing: We added a feature that ensures your Brex ERP data is refreshed daily and designed to keep ERP Fields updated automatically, reducing the need for manual updates. This feature will need to be toggled on in order to activate the auto-refresh setting and to benefit from automatic updates. Manual refresh options will remain available for those who prefer them. Sage Integration improvements

  • Sage Integration improvements: The Sage Intacct integration functionality has been improved to better the connection between Brex and the ERP system. This update addresses previous gaps and introduces new features and improvements, including automated reimbursements, repayments, and more. Learn more about the Sage Intacct integration here.

Brex ProAccess enhancements

  • Brex ProAccess enhancements: The latest update to ProAccess introduces the ability for bookkeeping firms to prepare bills using Bill Pay on behalf of their customers. This enhancement enables firms to customize employee access to the Bill Prep feature, ensuring specific team members can manage the billing process for designated customer accounts. When ProAccess users log into Brex, they are presented with a customized portal featuring tabs for "Clients" and "Teams." The "Clients" tab displays a list of customer accounts the user can access. By selecting a customer account, the user can login and navigate the Brex dashboard in the same way they would within the standard Brex environment. Learn more about ProAccess here.


Custom rules in Essentials

  • Custom rules in Essentials: Custom rules allow the auto-coding of transactions that share similar expense fields. This decreases the amount of manual categorizations customers have to make when closing books. Previously, we have only allowed the ability for Custom Rules on the Premium, Enterprise, and Smart Card packages. With the most recent upgrade, customers on our Essentials platform will be able to take advantage of custom rules with their respective ERP integrations. Learn more about custom rules here.

We're excited to share the next iteration of the Brex business account, which existing users will have access to later this summer. The new account structure includes:

New Primary Checking: Fully equipped Checking accounts* through Column N.A., Member FDIC, with fast global payments in more currencies than ever and up to $250K of FDIC insurance.

Separate accounts for Treasury & Vault: With Treasury, you'll continue to have access to the same money-market fund and high-yield earnings. With Vault**, your funds are protected with up to $6M in additional FDIC insurance coverage through our program banks.

Accounting

  • New accounting dashboard (early access): We’ve made the Brex accounting dashboard tables easier to use and more powerful with new search filters and the ability to save bespoke views and with new custom columns. New one-click shortcuts for managing rules and mappings will also save you time and hassle. Learn more.
  • AI-powered accounting rules: Now, as you close the books, we provide AI-generated suggestions for GL coding and merchant mapping. Suggestions will be provided in context, and you can accept, revise, or reject. Learn more.
  • Accruals (early access): Book accruals for incomplete expenses with one click to close your books anytime, and auto-reverse them in the following month. Learn more.
  • Custom accounting fields and visibility options: Enhance expense management by customizing the visibility of accounting fields and their options based on the type of expense – bills, card, or reimbursements. Admins can streamline the process by conditionally filtering which field options are visible to employees. Learn more.
  • Customize memos on export: We've simplified the process of reviewing Brex transactions in your ERP, in context, by automatically adding specific transaction details to the memo field upon export to your ERP.   • Accounting file transfer via SFTP (early access): We introduced a new way to safely transmit your sensitive accounting files. You can now export your Accounting Journal CSV to a Brex hosted SFTP server and retrieve your files safely at any time. Learn more.
  • Oracle Fusion & Workday Financials direct ERP integration: Customers using these ERPs can now seamlessly post transactions directly to their General Ledger for credit card transactions, reimbursements, repayments, rewards, and more. This enhancement streamlines accounting processes, reduces manual entry errors, and makes our accounting features accessible to a broader range of customers. It is available as a service add-on. Bill pay

  • Bill pay permissions: Historically, Draft bills and Approve payment permissions were only available for limited roles, for those who had an external bank account linked to utilize the Bill Pay platform. Now, all admins, regardless of whether their account uses an external funding source, can assign Draft bills and Approve payment permissions to every role.
  • Line itemization: Users can now itemize bills in their Brex dashboard under Bill pay by assigning different line items to various General Ledger codes and exporting the itemized bill to their ERP. This allows for easy line-level accounting categorization. Learn more.
  • Bill pay for multi-entity: Customers with multiple entities can now specify which entity needs to pay a bill, providing a better experience for their accounting capabilities. Previously, customers were unable to select the particular entity they would like to pay from.
  • Pay bills by card (early access): Previously, you could only pay bills with a check, ACH, or wire. Now, you can now use a virtual card to earn rewards on your vendor spend.
  • Purchase order matching (early access): You can import approved purchase orders into your Brex dashboard from QuickBooks Online or NetSuite in order to match upcoming bills, inform users of any discrepancies, and push updates to your ERP.

Corporate cards

  • Cards and limits: We designed a new Card and limits dashboard to help you issue and manage cards and limits easily — in one centralized view. No more clicking through your Wallet and Budgets tabs to manage company cards. Learn more.
  • Account co-branding: Our custom branding project will allow certain Enterprise customers to receive custom-branded Brex cards and branded experiences across desktop and mobile.
  • Accidental spend limit decline protection: You can use Brex Assistant to prevent declines as a result of an incorrect spend limit. Learn more.
  • P-Card spend continuity: You can specify if you want to automatically transfer virtual cards when an employee is removed from a limit or leaves the company. Previously, this feature had to be initiated manually.

Expense management

  • Spend limits: We made it easier to create and distribute spend limits with fewer clicks and questions to answer. Plus, you can now also approve requests for new spend limits and increases in Slack to save time. Learn more.
  • Spend requests: Customize what types of spend employees can request — such as travel, vendor spend, or IT equipment instead of using complicated PO workflows. Learn more.
  • User groups for limits: Issue limits dynamically to any employee group with custom user groups you can create based on shared attributes.
  • Dynamic policy rules: Instead of maintaining duplicate policies to enable spend in multiple currencies, create specific rules for specific employees, and route expense approvals to the right people, with customizable policies.
  • User groups within spend limits: You can issue limits dynamically to any employee group with custom user groups you can create based on shared attributes.
  • Expenses and Wallet tab updates: To create a consistent and high-quality UX/UI, we're revamping the table in Expenses so you can customize the layout, dividers, columns, and pagination. We've also upgraded filters, introduced named views, improved search, and enhanced bulk edit functionality.
  • End-to-end spend migration (early access): A new tool that allows new customers to easily identify vendors who accept cards, create limits and cards for those vendors, and migrate spend seamlessly with the help of an account representative. Note: This feature requires the assistance of a Brex Representative.
  • Template simplification (early access): Prior to these changes, policy creation and requests — i.e. any rules that govern how employees request certain types of spend — were embedded within a template. Now, policies and requests will live independently of templates.

Software and integrations

  • Slack app integration improvements: You can now chat with Brex Assistant in Slack to get instant answers about your expense, spend limit, and policy questions. Brex Assistant can also help you update expense information. Learn more.
  • Audit trail: The audit trail is a brand new feature that provides a detailed record of user activity and system events occurring in your dashboard. You can find your audit trail in the new Security tab of the Brex dashboard. Learn more.
  • Account management surface: The account management surface is where admins will go to set up their company information after opening their Brex account. Over time, the dynamic content in the account management surface will adapt to your business needs and help you set up additional capabilities that are reflective of your Brex onboarding journey. 
  • Dark mode: Users can now turn on dark mode for the Brex dashboard. Learn more.
  • Sandbox (early access): The “sandbox” dashboard feature provides a secure testing space where you can preview how bifurcation will affect your budget structures, test accounting integrations end-to-end, and copy subsets of data from their live dashboard. Note: This is currently only available to select customers.

Spend limits for all spend types

You can now use spend limits to track any type of company spend — including travel, procurement, and stipends. Spend limits can be spent via physical card, virtual card, reimbursement, or bill payment — with built-in controls that give employees confidence in every transaction.

And for easier tracking, you can assign each spend limit to an associated budget. That way, you get real-time visibility into how much money is actually being spent vs. your allocated budget.

We're teaming up with Uber for Business to make compliance easier. By using their new receipts integration, we can automatically add receipts from Uber to Brex transactions, streamlining the process. Previously, your team needed to either email or screenshot their receipts and manually add it to Brex. Now, when you connect your Uber for Business organizations to Brex, receipts will auto-generate for transactions made with Uber and Uber Eats. Learn more in this help article.

Uber for Business streamlines daily business travel and meals, making expense management and compliance easier. Guardrails on self-approvals

Today, admins and their copilots can approve their own budget requests, reimbursements, and expense reviews. To reduce compliance risks for certain accounts with more than three admins, admins and their copilots will no longer be able to approve their own actions. Spend limit suggestions

We launched spend limit suggestions to help employees accurately assign expenses to a spend limit. Not assigning expenses to the right spend limit can lead to expenses being denied or generally complicate expense management for admins and accounting teams.

If an expense is assigned to the wrong spend limit, the spend limit suggestions feature will now proactively suggest that the cardholder reassign the expense to the correct spend limit. We use a prediction model with machine learning to provide accurate suggestions based on spending. Reverse wires for payroll

With the launch of reverse wires, you can authorize your payroll provider to pull funds directly from your Brex business account for more reliable transfers than ACH debits. Many payroll providers such as ADP and Sequoia One prefer or even require reverse wires, sometimes known as wire drawdowns, because they are optimized for large, recurring transactions with varying amounts.

By connecting your payroll provider like Gusto to Brex, you’ll have more cash on hand, as reverse wires are processed in real time like a wire, often within 2 days of the payroll date. If you regularly send employee or contractor payroll and payroll tax payments every two weeks, wire drawdowns will consolidate all payroll withdrawals into a single transaction leading to easier reconciliation.

You can easily set up a reverse wire authorization from your Brex dashboard by following these steps and then contacting your payroll provider to complete the process.

We're automating your expense review and approval process even more with receipt validation. This process automatically verifies whether merchant, amount, and date in receipts match the corresponding expense details if a receipt is required based on policy.

If at least two of the verified fields (merchant, amount, and date) match the expense information, then the receipt is verified. There are several benefits to sending your next international wire in foreign currency, including exchange rate certainty and streamlined delivery. When you send a local currency wire, you will see your exchange rate upfront, which enables you to have higher confidence in the amount your beneficiary will receive. Local currency wires also often have less intermediary banks involved in the transaction, which can result in fewer unexpected processing fees and shorter processing times than wires sent in USD.

Webhooks for real-time updates from Brex API

We launched webhooks for the Brex API! Webhooks allow developers to receive real-time updates when their Brex data changes.

We currently support events for payment transfers and account referral status changes. Be on the lookout for more event types, such as pending card transactions, coming soon.

Our Zapier app supports these webhook events as triggers, so customers can set up actions whenever an event happens.

Easily budget with multiple business accounts

Your Brex business account now allows you to create up to 7 sub-accounts to better manage your cash flow.

Having multiple accounts is beneficial for easier budgeting, and it’s especially useful for separating your investor funds from operational expenses, a best practice for every startup.

Each account will have a unique account number and monthly reports.

Account admins can:

  • Deposit funds directly into any account
  • Set up recurring payments from any account
  • Set per-account MMF allocation strategies
  • Move funds instantly between accounts

Now when you open the Brex mobile app, you’ll see a personalized task inbox – making it easy to complete any tasks that need your attention and keep the business running smoothly.

Tasks can include payment approvals, and transactions with missing information. You’ll be able to complete the tasks right from your inbox in a few taps and get back to your day.

An easier way to manage cards

In response to feedback, we have built an All Cards tab in your Brex dashboard (vs. separate tabs for vendor cards, your cards, and employee cards). The new All Cards tab builds on the former All Vendor Cards tab, bringing that same level of control to all corporate cards, both physical and virtual. The result: a single page for admins to view and manage all the cards at your company.

Payment approvals now easier to find in app

We’ve updated the Brex mobile app so that account admins can find and approve their team’s payments faster. Requests could be hard to find in the past because they were nested in the transactions tab. Now it’s very easy to identify payments needing approval. Make sure your Brex app is updated.
